Metals are electropositive in nature which that metals are alwalys ready to loose electrone to form cations.
Thus oxygen is a non metal which is eletro negative in nature which have a strong affinity for electrons or which is aways ready to gain electron to forn anions...
so as the oxygen is more electonegative it is always ready to accept electons that electropositive elements posses great affinity towards oxygen. ..
