bcz the elements forming an elec. com. lose or gain their valence electrons to acquire a stable

it is because electrovalent compounds are formed by ionic bonds..that is..by giving and losing electrons..
so..they have strong inter ionic bonds and hence they are hard and brittle..
rather they are formed by exchange of electrons and not by sharing of electrons..hence they are pretty more stable..
although..they have high melting and boiling point as a considerable amount of energy is required to break their inter ionic bonds..
hope it helps..;)
