Why element loses its valency electrons to form cations

when an atom have excess number of electrons in its outer shell which makes it unstable for eg. in Na it's no of electrons is 11 and to become a stable molecule it should have 10 no of electrons I. e in order of 2,8 so it looses it's last electron and become cation by having +1 charge.
