Mrs. Slater was anxious and worried about Elizabeth’s coming because she wanted to grab everything that she could from her father. She was worried that if Elizabeth was there, she might have to share things with her.

She prepared by wearing a black dress for mourning. She believed that her mourning outfit should be better than Mrs Jordan. She also instructed Victoria to put her white frock with a black sash on. However, all this was just to show her grief while actually she was not at all upset.
