Energy flow in a food chain is called One way, because energy transferred from One trophic level to next can't be retained to the previous One again.
For example, herbivores can't transfer their energy to One trophic level back i. e. to plant.

H£¥A....!!
◆ The flow of energy in ecosystem is unidirectional.
◆ The energy enters the plants through photosynthesis. This energy is passed from one organism to another in a food chain.
◆ Energy given out by an organism as heat is lost in the environment.
◆ It does not return to be used by plants again.
◆ The flow of energy is unidirectional because energy lost in form of heat by living organisms cannot be used by plants again!
