Some early inhabitants of the British Isles were a group from what is now part of Denmark who were known as the Angles. When they settled in part of the island, people started calling it ‘the Angles’ land’ or ‘Angleland’, and the language they spoke ‘the Angle Language’ or ‘Anglish’. Over time, ‘Anglish’ and ‘Angleland’ became ‘English’ and ‘England’, possibly because they were easier and faster to say and possibly because they sounded less like the place was inhabited by a load of maths enthusiasts.
