The epidermis of plants living in dry habitats is thicker. This is for better retention of water and to protect from loss of water in form of water vapour. when the guard cells lose water to surrounding cells, they become flaccid. as a result, their inner thicker walls move inward and close the stomatal opening.

Explanation:
In some plants living in very dry habitats, the epidermis may be thicker since protection against water loss is critical. ... It protects all the parts of the plant. Epidermal cells on the aerial parts of the plant often secrete a waxy, water-resistant layer on their outer surface.
