It forms a boundary between the plantand the external environment. Theepidermis serves several functions: it protects against water loss, regulates gas exchange, secretes metabolic compounds, and (especially in roots) absorbs water and mineral nutrients

Epidermis is the outermost layer of the plant. The role of epidermis is to protect the plants from outer damage. The other three layers are andothecium, middle layers, tapetum.
