Ethanol has higher boiling point than ethane

  • Ethane is a saturated hydrocarbon which is composed of only hydrogen and carbon.
  • On the other hand, Ethanol is alcohol composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen due to the presence of OH as a functional group.
  • The boiling point of ethane is -89° C, whereas for ethanol it is 78.73°C.
  • The main reason behind this variation in the boiling point is that, in the case of ethane, the atoms are attached by weak Vanderwal's force.
  • On the other hand, in the case of ethanol the functional group OH is attached to the main chain through strong hydrogen bonding.
  • If the inter molecular forces are less, temperature required for bond dissociation is less and therefore boiling point will be less.
  • when it is more, temperature required for bond dissociation will be more, thus the boiling point will be more.
