Why evaporation is called surface phenomenon

Because water is on surface when it is evaporated by sun or etc.. it goes from land so it's surface phenomenon

evaporation is called a surface phenomenon because the particles at the surface gain enough energy from the surroundings or any other source of heat available to break the force of attraction between them...which ..increases the kinetic energy between the particles...The result of this whole process is that water..frm its liquid state changes into gaseous state...
