why even small animals are important in an ecosystem?

We know that mostly small animals are included in first level of ecosystem or food chain.

Hence, if they will not be found! then how can we imagine about the next level.

Another possible reason is that small animals like bacterias and lots more are responsible for decomposition, so in order to maintain the garbage of environment we need small animals too.
