• Excessive use of fertilizers alters the soil chemistry and makes is either to acidic or alkaline .
• Fertilizer should be used carefully in terms of proper dose, time and by adopting pre and post application precautions for their complete utilization . if these precautions are not followed, the fertilizers may that washed of through excessive irrigation and rainfall and create water pollution .
• Use of fertilizers may harm the life of aquatic animals and plants and me make the water unfit for drinking .
• Long term use of fertilizers can destroy the soil fertility because the organic matter in the soil is not replenished and useful microbes in the soil are destroyed .

For optimum use of land to achieve higher yield, short- term use of chemical fertilizers and long- term use of manure should be considered .
