If the periodic table were expanded beyond its usual layout to include the f block elements, it would look like this:




The table is rarely displayed this way because of the space it would need.  

Atoms fill f orbitals that are in principal energy levels that are lower than the outermost electrons.  Thus, the electron configuration for Nd (Z=60) is [Xe] 6s2 4f4.  The last electron goes into a 4f orbital which is inside the 6s orbital.
