Why farmers are sometimes adviced to add limestone to their soil?

The answer is because some soils are too acidic for agricultural crops to grow well. For instance, many soils n England are now more productive because lime is added. However, the use of inorganic nitrogen fertilisers also makes soil acidic, which is why lime use now has to be more routinely and widely used to keep Ph levels up. Unfortunately, the application of lime releases the carbon in the lime, which means this practice is an agricultural source of CO2 (greenhouse gas). Hope that helps.
