A hunger strike is a method of non-violent resistance or pressure in which participants fast as an act of political protest, or to provoke feelings of guilt in others, usually with the objective to achieve a specific goal, such as a policy change. Most hunger strikers will take liquids but not solid food.

In cases where an entity (usually the state) has or is able to obtain custody of the hunger striker (such as a prisoner), the hunger strike is often terminated by the custodial entity through the use of force-feeding.

this is all i know

Farmers in Tiruvarur district staged a hunger strike during the Pongal festival on Saturday blaming the state and Central governments for the prevailing distress of farmers in delta districts. They urged both the governments to announce a solatium as well as compensation for crop loss immediately. The farming bodies also demanded to disburse Rs5,000 to farm labourers per month till they start to get work again from agriculture lands. The president of All Farmers Associations' Coordination Committee P R Pandian, who headed the protest, accused the BJP-led Union government for not constituting the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and said that the Centre should take the sole responsibility for the farmers' deaths. While addressing the gathering, he urged the Centre to set up CMB immediately and waive crop loans disbursed from nationalised banks.
