Pea is a nitrogenous plant or it fixes nitrogen in soil through its roots. Wheat requires nitrogen to grow. This is the reason it is grown along with wheat. This technique is called mixed cropping.

Pea is a leguminous plant. It has the ability for nitrogen fixation. Plants cannot utilise nitrogen from air directly. As a result, pea plant convert atmospheric nitrogen into usable form which is taken up by wheat.
