The Indian farmers were forced by British planters to grow indigo and opium because it fetched a huge profit to them. China was the largest market for Opium to British and they fetched huge profits and economic surplus from it.
Secondly Indigo had a huge demand in Europe as well as to meet the demands of British industries. Thirdly Indian climate was suitable for the cultivation and large scale production of these crops.
