Every year does not have exactly 365 days. It has around 365.24 days.
So, to compensate for that extra 0.24 days or 5 hours 50 minutes, every four years, an extra day is added to the year. As February has the least amount of days (28), it is added to it. This concept is called a leap year. But then, not every four years is considered a leap year. Only those years that are not divisible by 100 but divisible by 4 or 400 are called leap years, so 2016 is a leap year, but 1900 is not a leap year, but then again, 2000 is a leap year.
