Because in these compounds there are more than 8e^- in outermost shell of central atom.

FeCl2 ,AgCl, CuCl does not follow the octet rule because:-

  • Chlorine compounds likeFeCl2 , AgCl \: and \: CuCl do not follow the octet rule because chlorine will hold more than 8 electrons.

  • Chlorine, which has valence electrons in the 3rd energy level can furthermore have access to the 3d sublevel, hence allowing for more than 8 electrons.

  • Elements which are present in the first 2 periods of the Periodic Table do not have access to the d sublevel and must cling to the octet (or duet H and He) rule.

  • The chlorate ion cannot be adequately represented by just one Lewis Dots structure.

  • Chlorine bonds likeFeCl2, AgCl \: and \: CuCl are of the same length and must be reflected as a hybrid of multiple resonance structures.
