Answer:

As in the West, there has been some criticism of feminist movements in India. They have especially been criticized for focusing too much on privileged women, and neglecting the needs and representation of poorer or lower caste women. This has led to the creation of caste-specific feminist organizations and movements.

Feminism is a range of political movements, ideologies, and social movements that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve political, economic, personal, and social equality of sexes.

Coming to why it is misinterpreted, you might just ask why poems or literature is misinterpreted. It depends on how people perceive it.

Another reason can be that India has had a history of patriarchal family system, which worked fine back in the 1800s, but is not applicable now. It's hard to change mindsets, especially when they're backed by traditions and culture.

The view of feminism became a sword of freedom, a path to happiness and a shield from oppression for many millions.

Did some mistake it for a scythe or an Elder Wand? Yes. Did others perceive it as an illusion, a mirage, deception? Maybe.

And how we, as Indians have perceived it? As media has portrayed it to us!

A nuclear weapon.

Wearing short, westernized outfits.

Wearing short, westernized outfits.Reason behind it with respect to feminism: Because it is her choice. Because she is an individual, and she should wear what she wants to and not be judged or moralized for it.

And if you reply saying, “Then men will stare because they're individuals too”, let me tell you, that that individual is then making another individual uncomfortable. That is wrong.

If you think it's against culture, it's her choice. No one is forcing men to wear lungis and kurtas, so why should she wear suits and sarees?

What people think it is: Being bold and against Indian culture.

Working late.

Working late.Actual reason: She has a career ambitions that she is willing to work hard for.

Misinterpretation: She doesn't care about rules, is a rebel, stays out late, is a disgrace.

Isn't married.

Isn't married.Reason: Might have a hundred thousand individual and personal reasons.

Misinterpretation: Wants to be a rebel and go against her family's wishes.

Do you even care about her wishes?

Hangs out with guys.

Hangs out with guys.Reasons: Because guys are chill, fun, and are our friends.

Misinterpretation: Shameless, and demoralized.

Does not follow a few traditions.

Does not follow a few traditions.Reason: Because they might be disrespectful to women or maybe she doesn't think that they should be followed. If she goes to a temple or does puja while on her period, it is fine.

Let's not go backwards in time and our views, just to get a point against feminists, people.

Misinterpretation: Hates our culture and traditions and is ruining the image of her family and what not.

Drinks or smokes or whatever.

Drinks or smokes or whatever.Reason: Although extremely unhealthy, she chooses to do it. Occasionally, it is fine.

Misinterpretation: She's trying to be one of the guys, so desperate.

God no. Stop. Stop right there.

We have to come together, girls. Fight for each other and not against each other.

In the great words of Tina Fey and the scriptwriter of Mean girls, slightly modified

“You have got to stop calling each other desperate and attention seekers. That just makes it okay for guys to do the same.”

Stop bashing each other, and stop bashing men.

If we are to be respected as females, then we must treat males the way we expect them to treat us.

We're fighting for social equality, not for radical feminism.

An eye for an eye makes the world blind. Stop treating men as inferior because it's apparently your right, because some men have treated you or other women like that sometime. No.

We are here to build a future, and not fight for the past.

Whatever injustice women have ever faced, we're changing it and that's why we're fighting for equality.

Don't do to mention what you wouldn't want to happen to yourselves.

Don't expect a seat if you won't give it up.

Don't judge if you don't want to be judged.
