The amount of energy released when an electron is added to
isolated gaseous atoms to form an ion is called electron affinity.
Electron affinity is exothermic process for uninegative ion.
But electron affinity is endothermic process for dinegative ion or tri negative ions,etc.
Why 1st electron affinity of Cl is negative and the second is positive:
When first electron is added to chlorine,energy is released.
So,1st electron affinity is negative.But when second electron is added, it gets repelled by the electrons already present.So, energy has to be provided. As this process is endothermic (energy is given).so, the 2nd Electron Affinity of chlorine is positive
