Flames occur when the volatile substances present in a particular substance vapourises and burns.
Flames are only produced when gaseous substances burn. A luminous flame is produced when the atoms of the gaseous substance are heated and start to burn.
Flames do not occur in all substances because all substances do not have volatile material.
