Floods are more common in north india becuse of the presence of himalayas at a higher latitude due to which water flows down the slope at a tremendous speed and removes or washes away the top soil with it.
Northern areas are more mountainous regions and have relatively more hills and mountains. Southern india have gorges and rapids and plateaus that are not very slanting
Hence in northern plains the rivers take up erosional recourse
