The fluorides are unstable in their lower oxidation state with transition elements because:

- The size of Fluoride ions is very small in comparison to the size of metals.

- Due to this reason, the electron - electron repulsion is high and the bond is weak.

- Moreover, Fluorine is the most electronegative element in nature, so it oxidises the transition metal to higher oxidation state.

- So the fluorides are unstable in their lower oxidation state.
