Food chain alone is not capable of maintaining the ecosystem because a food chain consists of only limited number and variety of species. Whereas in a food web there is a variety and a number of species that are responsible or are made to die for other species’s survival.

So basically what the concept is that in a food chain there are limited resources as well as variety and quantity whereas in food web there are more. More that required as far as I know.
