Why force is applied on the flattened end of a nail to fix it on a wall? Give reason for the question?

Pointed ends occupy a very small area , as a result of which the pressure ( = force / area ) on the walls/ objects due to the applied force is more and pins / nails can easily pierce. They have a flat head for our convinience.
