because force is a vector quantity

You apply force in a particular direction and hence it's direction is decided by it...e.g.you push a box and the box moves in the direction of the force applied,it's not going to move up you are applying force forward and it's magnitude is decided by how much strength you use to apply force...so force is a vector that has magnitude and direction.
