Wide foundations are to be given for high rise or tall buildings . Tall buildings will have more specific gravity. They will fall even for small earth quakes if they are not provided wide foundation. Moreover,the foundation have to withstand more weight.wide foundation can withstand more weight than smaller foundation.that's the reason.

Pressure = Force/Area
If the area is more, the pressure is less.
So if buildings have wide foundations, they do not sink under the high pressure of buildings.
