Friction increases when surface is polished because
if a person walks on a smooth or polished surface, he will be sliped from his legs
&
we know that friction is a contact force
connection with surface
if the surface is polished or smooth
the molecules come closer
and electrostatic force comes into play.
thats why friction increases when surface is polished or smooth.

when we make Surfaces ultra-smooth, inter molecular forces startsto act between the two surfaces as they come very close to each other due to which, it becomes harder to make them slide on each other. In other words, friction between them is increased but actually it is due to inter molecular forces
