SFTP, or SSH File Transfer Protocol, works differently to FTPS. Designed as an extension of SSH 2.0, SFTP creates a normal FTP connection but executes it over an already encrypted connection. The FTP data stream itself is no more secure than normal FTP, however, the connection over which it operates is more secure.
