Hey!!!..here is your answer
In gamete formation, the number of chromosomes must be halved, because gametes are required to be haploid. ... During meiosis, genetic information is exchanged between chromosomes, during crossing over. This, along with random assortment, introduces genetic variation, which is important for the survival of the species.
hope it will help you ☺

In sexual reproduction two gametes ( 1 male and 1 female) fuse to form a zygote therefore if the gamete would have been produced by mitosis there would be 2n number of chromosomes which means that the zygote formed would have 4n number of chromosomes. Therefore the chromosome nymber would not remain constant and each time a new species would be formed.
But we know that in meiosis the chromosome number in the daughter cell becomes n therefore the total number of chromosomes in the zygote would be 2n thus the species remains the same and so gametes are only produced by meiosis in for sexual reproduction.
