In India protests and fight against British rule was unorganized and in small pockets. Britishers were able to suppress easily.

But After arrival of Gandhiji from successful ,nonviolence, movement called satyagraha in Sought Africa, all the splinter groups came under one command. They all actively and wholeheartedly followed his command of liberation movement by means of satyagraha a non violence movement. This national unity was a threat to Britishers.

This kind of national unity never existed before and after the Ghandi age. Therefore calling him Mahatma or father of nation is the tribute to him.
