Pollution of the Ganges (or Ganga), the largest river in India, poses significant threats to human health and the larger environment. Severely polluted with human waste and industrial contaminants, the river provides water to about 40% of India's population across 11 states, serving an estimated population of 500 million people or more, more than any other river in the world.

Today, the Ganges is considered to be the sixth-most polluted river in the world

The main cause of water pollution in the Ganga river are the increase in the population density, various human activities such as bathing, washing clothes, the bathing of animals, and dumping of various harmful industrial waste into the rivers.

ACTION TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT

The process of declaring the stretch from Gaumukh to Uttar Kashi on the river Bhagirathi as an eco-sensitive zone has been initiated. A large number of pollution abatement projects on the river Ganga have also been sanctioned / implemented under the Ganga Action Plan and also under the National Ganga River Basin Authority initiatives supplemented by JNNURM.

A consortium of seven IIT’s has been tasked with the responsibility of preparing a comprehensive Ganga River Basin Management Plan.
