It is because the weight of these gases is lesser than that of water

hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen are lighter gases than water. Also these gases have lower density than water and are insoluble in water. So, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen gases are collected in gas jar by downward dispacement of water
