why generally no hydrogen gas is evolved when metals react with dilute nitric acid

nitric acid is a very strong oxidising agent. So it oxidises the hydrogen released and forms water.so that, no hydrogen gas is released
but when mg/mn reacts with dil.nitric acid, hydrogen gas is released
