Why glass and plastic are generally used for making optical fiber?

I normally don’t bother to answer homework questions, but this one intrigued me.

I don’t really know what the teacher who wrote the question was trying to get at. Real optical fibres are make with dozens and dozens of materials in order to get the right balance of cost, attenuation, dispersion and effective area.

One answer could be glass, dopants and PVC (coating). If you were thinking of a normal fibre optic cable.

Another answer could be silica, weird glasses and plastic. If you were thinking of the cores.
