Answer:

NaOH bottle is not kept open in labs nor is NaOH stored in bottles with glass stoppers. NaOH is hygroscopic. It reacts with CO2 from air to Na2CO3 (also NaHCO3) by the reaction: 2NaOH(aq) + CO2(g) -> Na2CO3(s) + H2O(l).

This leads to reduction in base equivalents and hence NaOH is not kept open.

Also when stored in a glass or plastic bottle, there is some air between the lid of the bottle and the solution inside which will also lead to the above reaction to take place. Presence of carbonate (Na2CO3) by the above reaction can form a crust at the lid of NaOH bottles. This crust makes it very hard and almost impossible to open the glass lid without breaking it.

Best is to store NaOH in plastic bottles or glass bottles with a plastic screw lid.

Answer:

Glass stopper should not be used with the containers of sodium hydroxide because it leads to reduction in base equivalents and hence NaOH is not kept open.

Explanation:

The reaction involved in this case is the following.

2NaOH(aq) + CO2(g) -> Na2CO3(s) + H2O(l).

This leads to reduction in base equivalents and hence NaOH is not kept open.

The NaOH solution slowly reacts with the silicon dioxide which is President a glass automatically. Damage glass and fittings. The glass stopper should not be used with a container because it will absorb water and any acidic gas from the atmosphere to become contaminated very easily. Sodium hydroxide should be stored in the container made up of high density polyethylene because other plastic will work if the air tight and chemically compatible, but it will be safe to stick it with high density polyethylene.
