Since boric acid does not react with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) directly, some kind of catalyst needs to be added to it so that it can be titrated. When glycerol is added to boric acid, the mixture turns monobasic in nature and now it can be titrated with an alkali using phenolphthalein.
Hence, glycerol is used in the assay of boric acid.
