Because you can't get the actual dimensions as the object has no definite sides or faces

Measurement of the area of the irregular object becomes easier when we use graph paper.
- In graph paper, we have small square boxes of 1mm
- We can keep an irregular object over the graph paper.
- Then let's count the number of the small boxes within the image.
- The number of small boxes multiplied by the area of the small boxes gives the area of the irregular object.
- If the thickness of the object is known, even volume can be calculated.
- This is indeed an effective method.
