Simple Answer (Bookish) : Within the layer, the carbon atoms are held by the strong covalent bonds but between the layers (as shown above) we have the weak Van der Waals forces and it therefore becomes easy for two layers to slip past each other giving Graphite its smooth nature and usefulness in lubrication.
