As the wave front of ground wave travels along the Earth's surface it gets attenuated. The degree of attenuation is mainly dependent on the frequency of the wave and is directly proportional to it. So, ground wave propagation is not suitable for high frequency as the losses are high.

Ground wave propagation:The process of transmitting waves over the ground is called ground wave propagation.

They are operated in the layer between the earth and the ionosphere.

They are used for long distant propagation.

Reasons:

  • The power of the transmission is very high.
  • Long distance propagation require big antennas.
  • The frequency is low or medium depending on the loss that occurs due to attenuation

Hence, ground wave propagation is not suitable for high frequency radio transmission.
