i) They are helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon. They were once called inert gases because they were thought to be completely inert—unable to form compounds. This is a reasonable belief because the noble gases have a complete octet, making them very stable and unlikely to gain or lose any electrons.
That's why, they are called Noble or inert gases.
ii) The general configuration of the valence shell is ns² np⁶. The exception to this is helium. It has the configuration of 1s². As they have the octet configuration in their valence shells already, they are quite chemically inert. they have the valency of zero.
