Why group one metals are termed as alkali metals

These metals are called alkali metals because they produce strong bases when reacting with water.

The metals in the 1st group are called Alkali metals because :They form Alkalies {Bases} [That means Strong bases which are used in nuetralizing Acids]. This nuetralization occurs Only when both acids and bases are combined {OR} Reacted with water.

And The main reason is "Group 1 Elements forms alkali solutions When they react with water".So Hence by this way The 1st group metals are called as Alkali metals.
