simple terms growth may be defined as an increase in size and mass. Growth can not be taken as a defining property for living beings, because non- living things can also grow i.e. they increase in size and mass. For example size of a mountain can increase by the accumulation of large amount of snow.

Explanation:

In living organisms, growth is from inside. Growth, therefore cannot be taken as a defining property of living organisms. Conditions under which growth can be observed in living organisms have to be explained in order to understand that it is a characteristic of living systems. Dead organism do not grow.
