Why growth of nationalism in the colonies is linked to an anti colonial movement

If there is growth of nationalism in colonies, it means that people of that colony want to be free from rulers. and if this feeling gets a rapid speed then the people have to protest against the unfavourable policy of the rulers and asking for a republic state. These protest later named as anti- colonial movement.
