Why had bangle making not been profitable business?

The Bangle making had not been a profitable business since it earned them very less. This can be justified by what Mukesh's grandmother says on this, i.e, 'ek waqt se pet bharke nahi khaya', where she explains that they havent properly eaten for a while. Mukesh's dad further says that the only thing he had lerned in his lifetime was to make bangles, but he also says he has a atleast put up a roof on his family's head, which is not less than an acheivement.
