Why had europeans called africa a dark continent?

It is because Europeans were white in color and Africans r too dark in comparison to the Europeans and so they called it dark continent.

European were not dark and were their skin was of white shade.
Africans skin was almost of black shade and were darker then European s .
So they called Africa a dark continent.
As it is a Continent too!
