As John was a story writer so this time he had to write a story on a ghost genre and was not so good in writing in such genre so he found it difficult. And to lessen his stress Lavinia (his wife) bought an Ouija Board for him so that he could talk to the spirits and get new ideas from it.

Answer:
John was the book-keeper for a lumber company. Being the end of the month, on saturday, he was too busy with his work. Also, since the day before i.e, friday was a half day, his work-load doubled. This made him so busy that he had forgotten about his ghost story and Lavinia's message. Though, at some point of time, he remembered someone to have informed him about his wife's message, but he was completely busy in finding the three lost bills.
