Bastar is located in the Southernmost part of Chhattisgarh. The colonial government in this region introduced reserved forest acts banned shifting cultivation, hunting and gathering. Such policies adversely affected the lives of the people of this region.

Accordingly, the people of Bastar launched a rebellion against the British government. However, the colonial government in acknowledgement to this uprising, employed force to crush the rebellion. Though the tribal chiefs made efforts to consult, the British commandos attacked their tents and fired on them. The British officers moved through communities beating and executing those who took part in the insurrection.
