why had the students been marching? how was it an unusual march?

Their marching was unusual because even policemen appeared, they kept on marching as if they didn't exist. They kept marching silently with no slogans and shouts. There was just a sound of shuffle of feet. People standing nearby were talking very quietly making low sound.
